August: Nurburgring

We went to this meeting looking for a hat trick of wins, sadly it was be something of an anti climax.

We qualified first in class, P9 overall, and Alan started the race.

After the first turn the fast Alpha driven by Arturo Mezario took over P1, but Alan was right in his wheel tracks as we both battled cars in other classes

Just before the half way point we sustained a big hit in the side, but Alan was able to continue and hand the car over to Geoff, who set about claiming back the time we’d lost under the Safety Car.

Sadly, history repeated itself going into turn 1, where Alan had been hit, and another car hit Geoff in the right rear corner, this cut down the tyre and he was forced to pit

Being the last lap of the race the Marshalls wouldn’t let him into the pits, so we finished P4 in class

The damage meant that we’re unable to finish our season at Zandvoort and Spa, but we’ll be back in 2020

June: Magny Cours

A new circuit for LettsRace and what a cracker it was.

France was gripped by a record heatwave, which saw temperatures up in the 40’s, despite that Geoff qualified the car P3 behind the two fast Ford Falcons.

The Falcons set off in the race, chased by our Cortina, and for the first half we were leading the class.

Alan took over at the halfway point and held P1 for a while before being overtaken by the second place Cortina.

Our front tyres were well past their best and Alan could only hold on for P2

May: Brands Hatch

A sterling qualifying effort from Geoff saw the LettsRace Cortina starting well towards the front of the grid (fill in qualifying position if you can remember), Geoff worked his way through the field & found himself challenging for the lead as it started to drizzle.

Unfortunately all his good work came undone when the safety car was deployed and we missed the pit window by seconds, meaning that when Alan took over he rejoined down in 27th.

Battling his way back through the field, Alan managed to bring the car home 5th in class, 9th overall (think I’ve remembered that right), with just a couple of bits of damage to the front and rear.

Oct: Dijon. Starting 7th on the grid, 3rd in class we blasted up the order on the opening lap to gain the class lead. A big push saw the gap extend out to 30 seconds at the driver change. A pit miscue involving another car resulted in a delay and a drop down the order. A stirling drive in the second part of the race enabled Alan to hold on to second in class until the chequered flag. 5th overall, 2nd in under 2 Litre class, and second in class. 2 trophies, big smiles all round!

August; Nurburgring. Class win for the second year at the Old Timer GP meeting. The car was strong out of the trailer. We got faster with each session and grabbed class pole, and 12th overall by 2 secs. Come the race we had to see off retired F1 driver Arturo Mezario in a quick Alfa GTA. A mid race red flag period saw the cars closed up and any time gaps erased. The chase was on! After the driver change Alan got his head down and was able to extend the gap again, set a personal fastest lap ever and seal the win.

May; Brands Hatch. A return to the Kent GP circuit is always special and the good weather promised fast racing. We lined up 7th overall for the race, 3 quick Cortina’s ahead. Everything went well, moving up the order until the pitstop. The clutch failed and left us nursing the car home. Great battle with Nick Swift in his Mini saw us cross the line 5th overall and second in class. Great result, shame the car wasn’t perfect!

April; Imola. Fastest Cortina in qualifying saw us line up 8th overall. A last lap of qualifying banzai effort saw the car pip the rest of the class for pole. Super pleased. In the race we stayed ahead until the driver change and a harness malfunction dropped us back down the order.  Racing hard to catch up the gearbox failed with 3 laps to go leaving us as a retirement. Disappointed but great to have a fast car.
